My Painting Origin Story

About/Origin Story

An artist can be defined as a person who practices any of the various creative arts, such as a sculptor, novelist/writer, poet, filmmaker etc, a person skilled at a particular t

ask or occupation, a performer, such as a singer, actor, or dancer etc.  For those of you that don’t know, I am an artist. I always have been. No matter what stage of my life that I find myself, there has been one consistent thing, that thing being my intense NEED to be creating something. Creating art, through whatever means you decide to create it is a divine act. The process of taking a thought and making it materialize in the physical is proof that we are also divine beings if we put our minds to something. Having to always be creating, I’ve explored every single aspect of what art is, I’m an author, I’ve published my own books, I’m a poet, I’ve made jewelry, I’m a musician, I used to play every brass instrument,  I’ve written and arranged songs, I’ve recorded music, I’ve dabbled in a plethora of art forms, but never painting. Prior to painting my first painting in spring 2024, I had never even attempted to paint anything in my life, I had never touched a canvas, I didn’t know that there were different kinds of paint, like oil, acrylic, and water, I didn’t know about color theory, or any techniques or anything. I didn’t even know that people draw on canvases and then paint over the drawing. I was shocked when I found that out because I thought everything was always freehand. So fast forward to spring 2024, about a month after my mom was called home. It was the Sunday right before Easter Sunday…I went to her church (which I never do) to sit in her seat. I felt my mom in that place that day. It felt like she was literally sitting right beside me happy that I had finally came to church. Lol After service I didn’t really want to go home, but I had no idea what or where I wanted to go. So, by chance and happenstance I found myself walking into what is probably my favorite store, Michael’s Arts and Crafts. Lol In hindsight I like to think that my mom guided me in there. So there I am walking through Michael’s like I often times did, looking for something to scratch that artistic itch I always have. I literally stumble into the painting section, a section that I had never in my life ventured into. I gave it a quick thought like “hey, maybe I should try painting” so I looked at the things I’d need to start and I quickly decided against it because painting material is super expensive. Lol So on my way out of the painting section my eyes caught a beginners painting starter kit. And it came with an easel, paint, paint brushes, pencils and all kinds of other things. And get this, it was 50% off. So then the possibility started getting a little more real. I kept looking for a medium. The only thing I could think of to paint on was of course a canvas. But if the canvases were too much I was going to put the starter pack back. So I find the canvases and what do you know, I found a pack of 5 canvases for $13. And that was enough to seal the deal for me. I got the paint starter kit, and the 5 canvases and went back home. That was how this painting journey began. Fast Forward to today. I’ve now been painting for about 2 years and this website is an extension of this journey.
